Sauna Floors

  Material   |  Wood   |  Heaters   |  Floors   |  Ventilation   |  Size

The floor is the coolest spot in the sauna (70-85°F or 21-30°C) so heat loss, insulation and heat-proof floor coverings are not very important. Rarely does the floor temperature even climb to 85°F (30°C). There can be many possible designs in floor construction to suit the sauna location.

The best sauna floor is concrete, waterproofed with sealer and finished in ceramic tile.

If the floor is currently covered with vinyl tiles, they can be left as the heat at floor level will not affect them.

Large plywood floor areas should be well sealed at all joints and sealed with several coats of wood preservative.

To completely waterproof a wooden floor, use ceramic tiles, fiberglass or seamless sheet vinyl and waterproof adhesives.

Avoid using linoleum which has a characteristic odor.

Drainage
Using a floor drain in a home sauna is optional. Most of the pre-built saunas today are installed in locations without drainage. Excessive use of water must then be controlled, although the water that splashes on the floor will quickly evaporate anyway in the dry heat of the sauna.
