Cedar has been the most commonly used material for saunas in North-America.
However, cedars high price and reduced quality it has become less attractive
to most sauna builders. A lot of people are sensitive to the odor of cedar,
and will find it hard to breathe in a sauna made from cedar.
Spruce and clear pine are the most popular woods used to build saunas in
Finland or centuries. Both spruce and pine are good sturdy materials that
will last for years. Spruce knots will not leak sap, so even knotty spruce
can be used in a sauna. Pine, however, should always be clear if being used
in saunas.
We import knotty spruce and clear pine from Finland. The quality is excellent
and the price is only a fraction of the price of cedar.
For sauna benches we suggest Abachi. Abachi comes from the Ivory Coast of Africa
and is the most commonly used bench material in Finland. Abachi's popularity stems
from it's ability to stay cool even when things really heat up in the sauna. Abachi
also has a nice light colour which beautifully compliments both the spruce and pine.
